Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors with activities, bus outings and fun times with our community. Although hot weather can be dangerous, especially for older adults and those with medical conditions. Before, during and after heatwaves, keep cool and stay hydrated. Use air-conditioning or fans when possible (fans may be less effective in extreme heat). Wear light, loose clothing and avoid going out during the hottest part of the day. Close blinds, stay in the coolest part of your home, and limit physical activity. Avoid using stoves/ovens and cool your body with damp cloths, cool packs, or showers. Visit air-conditioned public spaces if it’s safe to travel.
Open windows once the temperature drops. If outdoors, use sunscreen, protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat. Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty (check with your doctor if you’re on fluid restrictions). Avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks. Carry water when spending time outside.
