Falls are one of the most common causes of injury among older Australians, but the good news is, many falls are preventable. At Bankstown City Aged Care, we’re committed to supporting seniors to live safely, confidently and independently, whether at home or in one of our care communities.

Why is falls prevention important?

As we age, changes in balance, strength, vision and reaction time can increase the risk of falling. Even a minor fall can have serious consequences, impacting confidence, mobility and overall quality of life. That’s why it’s so important to take proactive steps to reduce the risk.

Simple ways to reduce the risk of falls:

There are several practical steps older people, and their families or carers, can take to stay safe:

  • Stay active with gentle exercises that build strength and improve balance, like walking, tai chi or physiotherapist-led programs
  • Review medications regularly with a doctor or pharmacist to avoid side effects like dizziness
  • Ensure good lighting in hallways, staircases and bathrooms
  • Remove trip hazards such as rugs, cords or clutter around the home
  • Wear well-fitting footwear with non-slip soles
  • Install grab rails and non-slip mats in bathrooms and consider handrails for stairs
