Our resident Cathy’s story is one of resilience, faith and connection. Born and raised in Britain as Catherine, she spent her early working years as a registered nurse in charge of a surgical section in a hospital in the UK. While she was working there, she met doctors from Australia, who encouraged her to migrate to Australia.
In 1972, she made the move to Australia, embracing not just a new country but also a new name. She became known as ‘Cathy’, a name she felt suited to her new chapter.
Cathy felt that migrating to Australia was a blessing in disguise, shortly meeting her husband at a Christmas Party she attended. Together, they raised three beautiful children together. Although her husband has since passed away, Cathy’s strong Christian faith has been a source of strength and guidance, helping her navigate life’s hardships with grace and gratitude. Cathy says, “I don’t believe in worrying as I always feel guided and closer to God.”
Cathy is a dedicated member of a Church in Padstow, where she has attended services every Sunday with 10 of her close friends that she has known for over a decade. She also volunteers her time each Wednesday at the church, helping to cut vegetables and wash dishes.
Cathy made the decision to move to Yallambee Village. At Yallambee, Cathy has become part of the warm and welcoming community since the day she arrived. “I was impressed when I came here,” says Cathy. “I have the option of participating in a variety of physical activities to improve my health and socialise more to make new friends.”
The caring team at Yallambee have also provided a place where she feels safe and supported in her daily life, with Cathy saying, “I am also being looked after by wonderful staff in a caring and friendly environment.”
Perhaps most importantly, Yallambee has allowed Cathy to stay connected to the things that matter most to her. “I am still connected to my community and go out on every Wednesday to help prepare meals for underprivileged people through my church.”
Cathy’s story highlights the profound impact of community and the value of staying connected, supported and engaged as we age. At Yallambee Village, she has found a welcoming home where she can continue living a meaningful and fulfilling life, and we are truly honoured to have her as part of our community.
