As the temperature drops, it’s important to take a few extra steps to stay well and safe. At BCAC, we understand the unique needs of older adults, especially during the colder months. Whether you’re looking after yourself or supporting a loved one, here are some simple ways to stay healthy, warm and connected this winter.

Keep Warm Indoors and Out

Older adults can be more vulnerable to the cold, so keeping warm is essential. Dress in layers, even when indoors and use extra blankets or heat packs to stay cosy. If heading outside, pop on a scarf, gloves and a warm coat to protect against the chill. Loved ones can help by checking in regularly and making sure heating is working safely and effectively at home.

Reduce the Risk of Cold and Flu

Winter brings a higher risk of illness, so it’s a good time to be extra cautious. Stay on top of your flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, wash hands often and avoid contact with people who are unwell. If you or your loved one feels under the weather, rest is best, and it’s always okay to reach out to a GP or care provider for advice.

Stay Connected and Rested

Good sleep and social interaction are important for emotional and physical wellbeing. Even in winter, try to keep a daily routine, get a little movement in and enjoy regular chats with family, friends or neighbours. Joining in a class or activity at BCAC’s Wellness Centre is a great way to stay active and social in a warm, welcoming environment.
