Feathered Friends Bring Joy to Yallambee Village
It was a day filled with laughter, curiosity and colourful feathers at Yallambee Village as residents welcomed some special visitors of the winged variety. The arrival of a group of friendly birds brought smiles all around, offering not just a delightful experience, but a reminder of the many benefits that spending time with animals can bring to older adults.
The visit was part of Bankstown City Aged Care’s commitment to creating meaningful, engaging experiences for residents – ones that go beyond routine care and contribute to emotional wellbeing. From the moment the birds arrived, residents were enchanted. Some gently held the birds, others fed them, and many simply enjoyed watching them flutter and interact with those around them.
Research shows that animal-assisted activities can have a profoundly positive impact on aged care residents. Interacting with animals has been linked to reduced stress, lower blood pressure, and increased levels of the “feel-good” hormone oxytocin. It also offers opportunities for reminiscence, conversation and connection – especially for residents living with dementia or cognitive decline.
Animal interactions also play a role in encouraging social engagement. For many older adults, especially those living in residential aged care, it can be easy to feel isolated or disconnected. Events like this create a sense of community, giving residents something to look forward to and talk about with one another.
At Yallambee Village, creating a warm and enriching environment is at the heart of what we do. We believe that wellbeing includes not just physical care, but emotional connection and moments of joy. Whether it’s through visits from animals, music therapy, intergenerational activities, or outings, we’re always looking for ways to support our residents in living full and happy lives.
The feathered visitors may have only stayed for the day, but the impact of their presence will be remembered for a long time. Photos from the event show residents smiling, laughing and engaging—all of which reflect the power of simple, heartfelt experiences.
As always, we thank our dedicated staff for helping bring these moments to life, and we look forward to welcoming more special guests in the future.
